When we were teen-agers, we were asked repeatedly, “What do you want to be when you grow
up?” There was that thought then, that by the time I graduated from high school, I would have a
plan. I would know what career I had chosen and what college I would attend to get trained to do
that chosen work. I remember thinking that, of course, the important part of my life was yet to
come. And I remember thinking, I would be making this important decision with clarity and that all
would be good. And while the “clarity” part wasn’t accurate, basically, all has been good. The
marriage, the career and the kids have been good. And I did know that somewhere out “there” was
a future called retirement. But I didn’t realize that making retirement decisions would be a lot like
the end of high school…..
the end of high school…..
What am I/we going to do next? Where are we going to live? Stay where we are? Or pull up roots
and try something new? In order to make good decisions, I have done like my children would do….
consult the internet. There is a world of information on become a parent, giving birth, being a
parent, picking a career, college choices, etc. But, other than financial information regarding
retirement, I am dismayed about the lack of information on the emotional choices of what to do next
in this phase of life. I want to read other people’s personal stories of moves they made, travels they
made (other than the grandkids’ house), adventures they took. We are the Baby Boomers, the
former Flower Children (or at least friends with former Flower Children). That should count for
something! We should be as adventuresome now as we were back then. And we should share those
adventures, those plans for adventures or those dreams of adventures. So… I am going to attempt
this blog and create an avenue for me to share what I know and learn and hopefully what you who
are reading this might be willing to share.
